NaturaLyte – Drug Side Effects Can Occur During Dialysis

NaturaLyte, one of two medicines used during dialysis, has been deemed a dangerous drug by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and a Class I recall has been put into effect against this medication. A Class I recall on any drug product means that the safety of the patient is compromised when the product is used.

Side effects from the use of this drug include:

  • Cardiac Arrest
  • Sudden Heart Attacks
  • Hemodialysis Cardiac Arrest
  • Hemodialysis Pulmonary Arrest
  • Arrhythmia
  • Altered Mental State or Confusion
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Stroke
  • Death

These side effects can occur either during dialysis, or shortly after the session. In 2010, 900 heart attacks were reported at dialysis centers while this drug was in use. The number of actual incidences that occurred overall, however, is unknown at this time.

NaturaLyte is used in combination with GranuFlo. The manufacturer, Fresenius Medical Care (FMC), a German based company promoted the product as easy to mix and that measuring the correct dosages had been made simple. Later, it was discovered that the medications were not easy to measure, and many patients were being hurt by the medication.

FMC is the largest manufacturer of dialysis equipment, supplies and medications in the world. The currently manage over one-third of the dialysis clinics in the United States, and their products are used in clinics that they do not own.

FMC became aware of the problems with the drug and issued an internal memo in November 2011 to its clinics to stop use of the product. They did not, however, issue any statements to other clinics using their product or to any patients that have received this harmful medication. In March 2012, someone from the company anonymously notified the FDA of this issue and a Class I recall was issued.

Most patients are not even aware who their dialysis clinic is managed by, or the manufacturer of their products. By failing to inform these consumers of the potential danger, this negligent action has led to many personal injuries and untimely deaths. If you or a loved one experienced any of these side effects when receiving dialysis, you may wish to seek the services of a dangerous medication attorney.

As a victim of this negligent action, you have rights under the law to receive compensations from the company that wrongfully allowed this product to remain on the open market. Additionally, if your loved one lost their life from this drug, you may be entitled to additional forms of compensation.
